SOUTH AFRICAN? WHERE HAS OUR CULTURE GONE?

Hello there...

I keep getting questions like am I Nigerian? every now and then people suggest that i'm kenyan, gambian, south african or even ghanaian I guess because of my Afrocentric style.

I recently wrote a caption alongside one of my instagram pictures about how the Nigerian culture seems like the more subtle of every other African tribe, the subtleties that I have come to accept as being non existent.

Every part of our culture seems so diluted that I feel like modernity takes the higher ratio of what we are right now than what we should be.

Culture as defined in social studies classes from secondary school refers to the way of life of a people, their values, clothing, food, language, beliefs and norms.

Every part that makes up our culture has been so diluted, our language is expressed in british intonations by the few people in our generation who can actually speak it and i am guilty of the same crime, our food is mostly made up of grains with no real identity of where we are coming from and our clothing has undergone the most change with several of our fabrics and ornaments gone with the wind.

With modernity discrediting conservation which really is the foundation for our culture, our values are dying.

I feel sad sometimes not really getting what our culture is about as being english or foreign seems like a better option.

I have to say that modernity has its good side though, now a woman can be more than a kitchen maid or a baby factory, she can wear a Dashiki / Agbada in a modern way and maybe even make it an everyday attire that in someway promotes our culture like other tribes do and even so creating room to explore other tribes.

I however must add that the need to remember our culture is important because like they say it's our heritage and for most of us who have never really left  home, we want home to remain as rich in its beauty as it is and as it was with modernity distilling it instead of diluting it.

I am not South African, I am Nigerian, I am African and I am Human.

My culture and heritage is a big Influence on my style.
